Team PSP Announces Driver Line-up For 2004 Season
Team Petronas Syntium Proton has today revealed its driver line-up for the 2004 BTCC season. The experienced South African racer Shaun Watson-Smith will partner the fast-rising Malaysian Fariqe Hairuman in the 2004 Petronas Syntium Proton BTCC squad. Underpinning the team's commitment to developing Malaysian driving talent, Mohd Syahrizal Bin Jamaludin (21) has been signed as a replacement for Fariqe Hairuman for Malaysian and Asian Races as well as BTCC Test
Driver.
Shaun Watson-Smith (33), from Port Elizabeth, is used to winning in Touring Cars having won his first ever Touring Car race and scoring five race victories for Team PETRONAS in the 2000 South African Touring Car Championship on his way to the championship runner-up spot. Since then he has extended his impressive performances with a string of wins in the fearsome Wesbank V8 racers.
Shaun began his motorsport career at 14 in motocross, taking several titles. He switched to karting at 17 and then moved to Production Cars in 1991. Following several championship victories, he was invited to join the Opel South Africa team in 1994 and racked up many more race wins and titles for the PETRONAS-backed works team and in the process became the most crowned driver the South African Production Car Series has ever seen.
Mohd Syahrizal Bin Jamaludin is already involved in an intensive driver development programme with renowned race Instructor Richard Lester at the Manfeild Circuit in Palmerston North near Auckland, New Zealand.
David Wong, Team Principal, Team PSP said: "Shaun brings valuable experience to Team PSP on both the racing and development fronts. Syahrizal is another young Malaysian talent we are grooming for success in the future and to follow in Fariqe's footsteps."
