Huff Set For First UK Outing In SEAT Sport UK Toledo Cupra
Robert Huff (Cambridge) will finally get the chance to drive the SEAT Sport UK Toledo Cupra with which he will contest the 2004 Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), at Donington later this month. Built by SEAT Sport at its motorsport headquarters in Martorell near Barcelona, the stunning SEAT Toledo Cupra is now at Ray Mallock’s workshops in Northamptonshire ready for Robert to drive at its British circuit debut at the BTCC media launch at Donington on March 16th.
“I can’t wait to get back out there,” said Robert. “It’s all now becoming a reality where before it hadn’t really sunk in. Now I’m a touring car driver in the BTCC and I’ve no excuses. I’m delighted to be running with RML, they’ve had a lot of success and I’m really looking forward to running with such a professional team.”
Following the media launch 24 year-old Robert, the 2003 Holiday Inn SEAT Cupra Champion, will head to Albacete in Spain where he will put his BTCC car through three days of intensive high-speed evaluation work.
“The new car is so much quicker than last year’s already,” he added. “There’s been a giant step forward, primarily in the engine department and I’d be disappointed not to be running mid field early on. My goal for the year is to beat my team-mate Jason (Plato) a couple of times. I’d expect to be say half a second slower in the first half of the season and getting equal at the mid-season point. After that I’ll be looking to out-qualify him and beat him in the races. He is the man to beat and as my team-mate the only real benchmark for me.”
The car will appear in the 2004 BTCC in FIA European Touring Car Championship specification and therefore be powered by a 4-cylinder 2000cc atmospheric petrol engine unit, producing 260bhp.
“Personally I think it’s a good decision to run with the petrol engine, there’s no point in changing things as the car has gone so well already. There’ll still be some development work on the diesel engine of course, which hopefully I’ll be involved with. It would be good to try something completely different, I’ve never raced a diesel, but petrol is the right choice for this season.”
