Raising The Stakes |

With the RML description of the Privilege GT Championship as “the premier National Sportscar series in Europe” comes recognition that the BRDC have created a highly significant championship that will be fought out as never before in 2001.
The BRDC were brave enough to allow the TVR Speed 12 to compete, knowing that there was an intention to build further examples and that rules were in place to handicap the car if necessary. Will it be necessary with the Saleen? A certain team owner from Leatherhead relishes a challenge, so Ecurie Ecosse will have their hands full taking on Lister (both with their fifties heritage) and others, but the series is apparently moving away from an earlier era when wealthy owners paired themselves with quick professionals. Now, it is up to everyone out there driving to be as quick as necessary, because the Saleen logically won’t have a gentleman in the driving seat.
Will other GT class cars be able to keep up with the latest machinery? Vipers should, the BW Motorsport Porsche should, the Esprit could take to the grid with more power, while the Speed 12 will have a year’s development behind it. The stakes have been raised for the second year of the revised championship. If we didn’t miss the GT1s in 2000, we certainly won’t in 2001.
