This is the car that takes MG back to Le Mans, following on from their efforts in the sixties with the MGA and MGB.
Peter Stevens, MG Rover Group Design Director, is responsible for the design of the carbon-tubbed LMP675, which Lola Cars International Managing Director David Bowes describes as “the most technically advanced sportscar project Lola has ever managed.”
He describes it as the “fourth sports racing car project” to come out of the company, which is a reference to the modern Lola Cars International and their B98/10, B2K/10 and B2K/40 models. The latter won the LMP675 class at Le Mans in 2000. The original Lola Cars were responsible for a range of sports cars, with the T70 the most famous of the line.
MG Rover Group Director of Product Development Rob Oldaker explained that, “MG has a fine pedigree in motorsport and a return to Le Mans is a major step in developing the brand and company image.”
The car is expected to be powered by a four cylinder, turbocharged Rover-based unit, currently under development with a specialist in the UK. With the return of Bentley and MG, 2001 at Le Mans should be a peculiarly British experience, with a corner of France deluged by eccentric Brits in their eccentric cars. Don’t miss it.
An all British driver line-up?
