Pobst Grabs Pole For SCCA SPEED GT Race At Lime Rock Park
Sets New Speed GT Qualifying Record
Randy Pobst set a new SCCA Pro Racing SPEED GT qualifying record today en route to grabbing the pole for Monday’s Round Two race at Lime Rock Park, part of the Road Racing Classic Featuring the Mohegan Sun Grand Prix. Pobst’s teammate Michael Galati qualified second and local resident Michael Culver will be third on the grid.
In a sunny and cool afternoon in Northwestern Connecticut for SPEED GT qualifying, Pobst, driving the No. 1 Audi Certified Pre-Owned Audi RS 6, set a new qualifying lap record early in the session. The defending SPEED GT champion shattered the old qualifying record, which he held, when he turned a time of 0:54.362 (101.320 mph) on the 7-turn, 1.53-mile circuit.
“One factor here at Lime Rock was the traffic,” Pobst said of his qualifying run. “Our Audi RS 6 has bigger tyres this year, but we have less power. And, Lime Rock is a handling track. So, I’m actually a lot happier with my car on this track than I was last year. I amazed at how close it is. I turned a good lap right off the bat and then I ran hard for a few more to try to improve it. And, I think I turned almost the exact same lap. So, I squeezed the Audi Certified Pre-Owned RS 6 for all it could get. I love having the pole. I think I would be leading into turn one even if we weren’t on the pole because we have Quattro starts. That’s going to give us a good margin at the start of the race and we’re going to see how well we can hold it. I’m looking forward to the competition. I hope it’s an Audi one-two for me and Michael Galati. We’re still praying for rain.”
Pobst’s old SPEED GT qualifying record was 0:58.759 (93.738 mph). Pobst is gunning for his second career win at Lime Rock Park. He last won at this venue in 2002.
Driving the No. 2 Audi Certified Pre-Owned Audi RS 6, Galati recorded the second fastest lap of the day with a 0:54.445 (101.166 mph). He will start on the outside of row one giving Audi the top two positions on the grid, just as in both 2003 races. The five-time series Champion, who went winless in 2003 and who has not won a race in his last 16 SPEED GT starts, looks to get back on the winning track by getting his second SPEED GT win at Lime Rock.
Culver, who was fastest in the combined practice sessions on Friday, qualified his No. 14 First Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup third on the grid. Culver set the early pace in Saturday’s qualifying session until Pobst turned his record lap. A resident of Westport Culver hopes to put on a show for the hometown fans Monday from his career-best starting position.
Lou Gigliotti will start fourth in his No. 28 LG Pro Long Tube Header Corvette ZO6, while current SPEED GT point leader Max Angelelli will start fifth in his No. 16 Cadillac/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose Cadillac CTS-V.
