The Audi Certified Champion Racing RS 6 Cars Claim Front Row During Qualifying At Lime Rock Park
A pair of Audi RS 6 "Competition" cars will start from the front row for Monday's SPEED World Challenge GT race at Lime Rock Park as part of the Memorial Day weekend Road Racing Classing featuring the Mohegan Sun Grand Prix.
Randy Pobst not only set the fastest qualifying lap with a time of 0:54.362 (101.321 mph), but also set a new SPEED GT qualifying record for the track. Michael Galati was just a few tenths behind Pobst with a time of 0:54.455.
The powerful 4.2 litre, V8, bi-turbo engines of the RS 6s put the Audis in front position within the first 5 laps of the half hour qualifying session. Champion Racing Team Manager Mike Peters opted to hold the cars in the pit area for the rest of the session to preserve the Toyo RA-1 tyres. The strategy paid off as none of the other 28 cars could better the time set by the duo from Audi Certified Champion Racing.
Rod Bymaster, Motorsport Manager for Audi Sport North America, was very pleased with the outcome of today's qualifying session. "Congratulations to Champion Racing. Louis Milone (Audi RS 6 Team Leader) and the rest of the team have worked really hard since Sebring and obviously the work paid off. We were on the pole here last year as well as two years ago so it's a great trend so far for Audi and Champion Racing."
Randy Pobst:
"Today was so nerve wracking for me. We are all so close and it was torture for me to sit in the pits while everyone else was out there. I wanted the pole so badly because I wanted it for the team and for Audi Certified Pre-owned. I expect the usual excellent start because of the Quattro system but I also feel that this car can be driven hard throughout the 50-minute race. It's just a really well built car."
Michael Galati:
"The team has done a fantastic job on these cars since Sebring. I'm happy to be second but I felt I could have done better had I not been in some traffic. I'm happy to be in the front row though because that's where we belong. The hard work by Champion Racing has once again paid off myself and Randy."
Louis Milone (RS 6 Team Leader)
"Well, we're back up on the front row where we belong. I think a lot of good decisions by the drivers and team were made during qualifying. We're looking forward to Monday to a stellar, front row, double Quattro start."
