2nd Place In Class After 6 Hours
After six hours of running, the Care Racing supported Prodrive Ferrari No. 66 is well positioned in sixth place overall, second in the GTS class. All three drivers have now completed their first two stints in the car, and there are no problems with the 550 Maranello.
Peter Kox took the start and held the GTS lead until the first round of pit stops, and thereafter stayed closely behind the No. 64 Corvette, the new class leader. Shortly after Tomas Enge started his double stint, he spun on the same patch of oil at the Porsche Curves that had caused the Audi accidents. The Czech was fortunate not to hit anything, and returned to the pits to change tyres and clear gravel from the car, thus dropping behind the team's other car in the running order.
Car 65's driving crew have also all completed their first double stints and were holding a strong 2nd position in class, with Colin McRae at the wheel, when he also had a spin. He explains:
"I was at the Mulsanne Corner and had moved to one side of the track to let a prototype pass but got onto the marbles and the car started to spin. I tried to catch it but don't think I had enough revs and after that the clutch started slipping. We decided to change it and the team did a great job to get the car out again after about 30 minutes, although we unfortunately lost 8 laps in the process. It was a shame as my lap times were very consistent until then and I was beginning to get into a good rhythm."
A further update will be issued at 0400 hrs.
