Night Time Is The Right Time At The Peak
Second Stage To Run In Darkness For First Time Ever At Pikes Peak
The peak’s six-inch snow cover from Monday’s summer storm has mostly melted, but the lack of frozen precipitation will do little in calming the nerves of several first-time hill climbers who are running the 82nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the fifth round of the SCCA ProRally Championship Presented by Hot Wheels.
So what has nerves a bit more uneasy this time around as opposed to any other year?
Consider it a reaction to the newest ingredient the Championship has dashed into its recipe for flair; taking one of the world’s most well-known races, one that already leaves many shaking their heads in disbelief at the obvious risks involved, and making it tougher.
The task of running the peak is daunting, rookie or not. First, imagine running 12-plus miles up the slope. Then, imagine 156 turns woven into the mountainside, propelling your car toward the majestic 14,000 ft. summit at speeds reaching, at times, over 130 miles per hour. And now, imagine running a portion of it at night.
For the first time ever, rally teams will tackle the geographic masterpiece under a blanket of stars as one of four additional stages that were added to this year’s edition.
In all, rally fans will get almost three cracks at the hill in full, with both full runs from bottom to top on Saturday. In the days leading up to the weekend, however, three other stages are scheduled. Starting Thursday morning at 9 a.m., competitors will drive a different portion of the mountain’s only road. After a single stage on Thursday, light will be absent except for light pods on Special Stage Two, which is scheduled to begin at 3:45 a.m. (MDT) Friday morning, followed by SS3 at 6 a.m.
