Round Five The Swansea Bay Rally
Fifteen championship contenders will compete over the 73 miles of Swansea Bay Rally gravel using similar stages to Septembers Wales Rally GB. This will provide a fantastic opportunity for the drivers to test their 150bhp machines to the full.
Leading them away is current championship leader Ieuan Rowlands who along with co-driver Kelvin Savage has two wins on home ground. He will want to increase his advantage over second placed Gareth MacHale since the championship scoring allows for the three worst scores to be dropped at the end of the season.
Motaquip Junior category leader MacHale also has two wins and he has experienced Welsh co-driver Clive Jenkins alongside for guidance, Clive celebrating the recent birth of his second daughter Megan last week. His third year in the 206 Cup, MacHale is still only 23 years old and is hoping to complete his apprenticeship with the coveted title. But with four rounds still to run, he will have to push very hard to keep Rowlands in sight.
Another local youngster is Stuart Jones who has three second places to his credit. Guided by Rich Edwards, he has wins in the bag from 2003 but needs a bit of luck and home support for his first 2004 victory. The points system means that he is still in a strong position but cant afford for the top pair to have it all their own way.
Mike Faulkner and Peter Foy run fourth on the road and hold the same position in the championship. Third on the previous round, Faulkner is a staunch supporter of Peugeot one make series with wins in the 90s and again on his home Scottish rally last year. The good quality stages will favour his smooth driving style with a higher podium step in his sights.
Kent based Paul Jones rounds off the top five, improving from 2003 with a solid fourth place on the opening round after leading the event early on. Another driver with a Welshman alongside, Darren Garrod will continue to read the organiser-supplied notes for the fifth time this season.
Sixth place is occupied by former touring car driver Tom Boardman with 2003 champion co-driver Richard Pashley on the notes. They struggled early on and missed the Manx with a race meeting clash but took fourth on the Mutiny Rally, promising more to come.
Seventh are Stephen Petch and Michael Wilkinson. Young Petch is still eager to uphold family honours and leads the rookie section with a clean sweep of maximum points. Eighth but leading the next batch of 206s on the road is Jon Tucker and Hamish Campbell. Tucker leads the Hella Improved category, consistently beating his seeding on all but round two. Ninth on the road is another team loyal to the Peugeot one-make championships, Trevor Martin and Ray Cleghorn having contested every rally since 1999. Rounding off the top ten is a refugee from VWs Polo challenge, Clive Wheeler and Ken Bartram enjoying the closeness of competition in equal machinery.
The final five is made up of Coalville man Andrew Pawley who has one finish from just two starts this year, English based Irishman Michael OBrien who leads the veterans category from Wheeler, and Jonathan Sparks who has been surprised by the pace, coming to the series with some excellent results in an Astra under his belt.
The final pair have contested just three events between them this year due to budget constraints but Colin Britton and Matt Jessup have been lured back to the championship with the promise of a share of the prize money.
The rally starts and finishes at the County Hall, Swansea with the first car over the ramp at 08:30. To the north east of Swansea is Walters Arena from where two of the seven stages can been viewed immediately adjacent to the central service area. A compact route means that the cars finish at 17:15 with a presentation at 21:00 in Rally HQ at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Swansea.
Coupled with the friendly rivalry the Peugeot TOTAL 206 Super Cup continues to be the closest competition in the UK and the Swansea Bay Rally is a fitting start to the second half of the season
