Cadillac CTS-V Race Cars Head West
Max Angelelli And Andy Pilgrim Look For Victory At Infineon Raceway
The General Motors Cadillac CTS-V racing team returns to competition this weekend for Round Four of the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California.
"We're looking forward to racing at Infineon Raceway as it will be a challenge for our engineers to setup the car for a track where we've never raced," said David Spitzer, program manager for the Cadillac CTS-V race car. "We have great confidence in our engineering staff and our drivers, but a new environment will undoubtedly present a few surprises."
Three races into the 2004 season, the new Cadillac team has claimed three podium finishes, including a 1-2 victory at Sebring in March. Cadillac holds the second position in the Manufacturers' championship while CTS-V driver Max Angelelli trails the lead in the drivers' title by only nine points.
Andy Pilgrim, driver of the No.8 CTS-V race car, will be making a debut of sorts in the Cadillac at Infineon Raceway, although he's no stranger to the circuit. The American first won at Sonoma in 1986, a six-hour endurance event in which he co-drove with Bill Bailey in a Pontiac Firebird.
"I love racing at Sonoma because it's a drivers' track," said Pilgrim. "There is a real premium on handling, and the Cadillac CTS-V is inherently a great car in the corners. The track favours a wise setup, as you have a couple of very fast corners and some slower, technical stuff. Turn 10 is one of my favourite corners in all of North America."
Pilgrim returns to his No.8 Cadillac after a hard-fought race at Mid-Ohio just weeks ago, where he won the "Power Move of the Race" award after an excellent pass on a Saleen into Turn 8. The Cadillac driver said that Infineon Raceway's track characteristics do not lend well to overtaking.
"Sonoma isn't a terribly easy place to pass," said Pilgrim. "There are some corners where you have to commit. It can be done, but in a series such as World Challenge where the cars have similar power and handling characteristics, it's not easy. I know the entire team is very much looking forward to this race."
The Cadillacs begin official timed practice sessions on Friday at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway.
