Historic Ferrari Will Be Displayed At Infineon Raceway
Pirelli-Shod 333 SP Dominated Sports Car Racing in the 1990s
The Pirelli- shod Ferrari 333 SP, one of the most significant and most successful cars in the annals of sports car racing, will be making a special appearance at Infineon Raceway. During the weekend, an example of this famous Ferrari will be on display in victory circle.
“The American Le Mans Series has always been for the fans, and we have been looking at ways of increasing the excitement for fans at our events,” said Scott Atherton, President and CEO of the ALMS. “The Ferrari will be in victory circle for fans to view and to have their pictures taken with the car.”
Here are some pertinent facts about the car, gleaned from an appreciation of the 333 SP written by Michael Cotton, known worldwide for his motorsports writing:
Gianpiero Moretti, founder of the Momo wheels company, proposed the idea for the car to his good friend Piero Lardi Ferrari. Moretti envisioned having Dallara design and build the car with Ferrari providing obsolete Formula 1 engines enlarged to 4-litre capacity to meet the World Sports Car regulations, which came into effect in 1994.
Lardi received a go-ahead in 1993 and Gian Paolo Dallara, produced a honeycomb aluminium chassis reinforced by carbon fibre panels, clothed in carbon fibre bodywork. The 60-valve engine revved to 11,000 rpm and produced 600 horsepower. Drive went through a 5-speed sequential, transverse gearbox, another piece of very high-tech equipment in a package, which made everything else look obsolete!
Four 333 SPs made their 1994 debut on the grid at Road Atlanta for the third round of the IMSA World Sports Car Championship, the first sports cars to wear the Prancing Horse badge after an absence of 21 years. The Ferraris dominated the 2-hour race claiming pole position and finishing 1st and 2nd. Moretti, then aged 54, earned his first win in 14 years when he and Eliseo Salazar triumphed at Lime Rock, going on together to win at Watkins Glen and at the Indianapolis road course.
In 1995 the Ferrari notched its first major success at the Sebring 12 Hours and ended the season wining the IMSA Manufacturers’ Championship. Ferrari tied with Oldsmobile for the Manufacturers’ Championship in 1996 but the title went to Olds with a greater number of race victories. In 1997 the 333 SP won Sebring for the second time, among its Professional Sports Car Racing (previously IMSA) wins.
In 1998 the No.12 Doyle-Racing Ferrari 333SP on display in Infineon’s victory circle this weekend had one of the most successful years for the Ferrari 333SP with wins at Daytona, Sebring and in the inaugural Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, plus another Manufacturers’ Championship. The car also won the prototype class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year. In Europe the 333 SP won the International Sports Racing Series/Sports Racing World Cup/FIA Sportscar Championship series in four successive years, 1998-2001.
