Cadillac Qualifies On Row 2 For Sonoma
Andy Pilgrim Sets The Fastest CTS-V Time On Saturday Morning
The General Motors' Cadillac CTS-V racing team has claimed the fourth and sixth spots on the 26-car grid for Round 4 of the Speed World Challenge GT Championship at Infineon Raceway. Andy Pilgrim will start Sunday morning's race from the second row of the grid, fourth position, after posting a time of 1:41.145. Max Angelelli will start on the third row after qualifying his No.16 Cadillac in sixth position at 1:41.783.
"Our engineers are trying everything they can think of to squeeze the lap time out of the cars," said David Spitzer, program manager for the Cadillac CTS-V race car. "Both our drivers worked hard get the best out of the car. We gambled a bit on Andy's setup and it ended up paying off while Max wasn't wild about his car's performance. It should be a very interesting race tomorrow morning."
26 cars started the 20-minute qualifying session in clear conditions. Pilgrim and Angelelli immediately put themselves towards the top of the running order with fast laps. After data collected from Thursday and Friday practices, team members made slight suspension changes to both cars. Andy Pilgrim was happy to turn the fastest lap for Cadillac after an incident in Friday practice prematurely ended his session.
"I have to give a lot of credit to the crew and the engineers for preparing the car for qualifying today," said Pilgrim. "They had to convince me to use a certain kind of spring, but it worked perfectly. We did one out lap and I came back and gave the guys a bit of feedback and we made one small change. After that, the car was the best it has been all weekend."
With new competition adjustments from the SCCA, the Cadillacs have faced a 50% restriction on air flow intake, 200-lbs. addition to their base weight, significant restriction in engine speed and weight redistribution from rear to front. Max Angelelli commented on the changes but said that his car will be competitive on Sunday.
"I wasn't very pleased with my qualifying but it should be an interesting race on Sunday," said Angelelli. "I think we are going to make some changes to the car and hope for a better result tomorrow."
