Stretch Captures Pole After Setting New SCCA SPEED Touring Car Qualifying Record At Infineon
Bob Stretch, of Dallas, established a new SCCA SPEED Touring Car qualifying lap record en route to winning the Air Force Reserve Pole Position for Sunday’s SPEED Touring Car Round Five race at Infineon Raceway, as part of the Grand Prix of Sonoma Presented by Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa. Sweden’s Nic Jonsson and Bill Auberlen completed the top three.
Stretch, whose previous career-best start was second earlier this season at Sebring International Raceway, set the new qualifying lap record in his neon orange and green No. 98 Wheels America BMW 325Ci early in the session with a time of 1:46.865 (85.229 mph) and made it stick.
“I never had a good clean lap yesterday,” Stretch said of going from seventh in yesterday’s qualifying session for Round Four to qualifying on the pole for Round Five. “Today we had a nice clean lap at the beginning and that was what we needed. This track lends itself to BMW’s handling and I think we hit the setup really well.”
Stretch trumped the record set Friday by SPEED Touring Car point leader Auberlen, who turned a fast lap of 1:47.671 (84.591 mph) in qualifying for the SPEED Touring Car Round Four race this afternoon.
Piloting the No. 27 Lectric Air/Tecmark Corporation BMW 325Ci, Jonsson will start on the outside of row one for the second time in as many races thanks to his time of 1:47.126 (85.021 mph). Jonsson is gunning for his first career SPEED Touring Car win, after having finished second in the last two races.
Auberlen, who is the defending SPEED Touring Car race winner at Infineon, will start third in his No. 1 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i after running a time of 1:47.312 (84.874 mph). Auberlen has had great success at Infineon and looks to make his third trip atop the SPEED Touring Car podium this season.
Peter Cunningham will start fourth in his No. 4 TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SE-R, while Auberlen’s teammate Justin Marks will start fifth.
