Michael McDowell Records Third Back To Back Win
Michael McDowell has launched himself back into the championship hunt in the Star Mazda Series North American Championship. He captured his third consecutive victory in four races today at Infineon Raceway in one of the American Le Mans Series support races.
McDowell, who finished third at Infineon in his Star Mazda Series debut in 2002, and repeated the feat again in 2003, was pleased to finally make his way to the top of the podium at this event. "Even though I'm from Arizona this is a sort of a home track for me," McDowell said afterwards. "I've always managed to run well here only to fall inches short of the victory so it's nice to bring the win home for everybody at Star Race Cars who put in long hours to give me a great car."
McDowell started from pole and immediately pulled out a commanding lead only to have the course go yellow for the first of two times. This, however, did not stifle McDowell, as he was able to repeat his performance in each of the two restarts. 38 cars took the green flag and by the fall of the chequered 25 remained on the lead lap as the new Pro Formula Mazda made its first appearance on the west coast.
McDowell has moved into second place behind series points leader, and team mate, Daniel DiLeo with this finish. “It is not going to be easy to make up for our current points deficit but we are going to try to keep this winning streak going and go for the championship,” said the elated McDowell. He will start the next round of the series 20 points behind DeLeo.
