Plumb Wins Pole For SCCA SPEED Touring Car Round Six At Portland
Realtime Racing On Front Row
Matt Plumb set a new qualifying lap record en route to winning the Air Force Reserve Pole Position for this afternoon’s SCCA Pro Racing SPEED Touring Car Round Six race at Portland International Raceway. Plumb’s RealTime Racing teammate Brazilian Pierre Kleinubing will start on the outside of row one and Jeff Altenburg will start third.
Driving the No. 43 RealTime Racing/SANZ/Sun Microsystems Acura TSX, Plumb established a new qualifying record with a lap of 1:23.961 (83.253 mph), which he set on his second lap of the session. It is Plumb’s second-career SCCA SPEED Touring Car pole and his second of this season.
“The only way I can explain it was that we both got a perfect lap or a great lap,” Plumb said of his and Kleinubing’s qualifying laps. “I know I made a couple of mistakes. But, on the second lap, with these tires, if you have a decent to good lap from corner to corner you are guaranteed to faster than the next lap if you get it perfect. It’s all about getting it perfect or close to perfect on the second lap.”
“Not really,” Plumb added regarding whether there are any ‘team orders.’ “We’re both are out there to win as many races as we can. As far as team orders are concerned, whoever gets to the first turn first is in the lead. And, if they relinquish it, so be it. There is no real set plan. I am sure we’ll talk and come to an agreement that if we are running competitively against one another that we’ll try to pull away from the rest of the pack and decide it later on. But, there are no real team orders or plans.”
Three-time series Champion Kleinubing, piloting the No. 42 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, equalled his best qualifying position of the season turning a lap of 1:24.002 (83.312 mph), which he also set in his second lap of the session.
Appearing in only its third race, Altenburg qualified the No. 71 Tri-Point Mazdaspeed Mazda 6, third on the grid, which is the highest qualifying position for that car. Altenburg turned a time of 1:24.518 (82.803 mph).
Bob Stretch will start fourth in his No. 98 Wheels America BMW 325Ci, while rookie Dino Crescentini, No. 3 Turner Motorsports/H&R Springs/Centric Parts BMW 325i will start fifth.
