Archer Edges Angelelli For Portland SPEED GT Pole
Tommy Archer captured his first SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship pole position, and the first-ever for the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe, for Sunday’s Round Five race at Portland International Raceway. Italian Max Angelelli was just 0.010-second behind, and will start second.
Driving the No. 22 c3controls/Whelen Engineering Dodge Viper Competition Coupe from the 3R-Racing stable, Archer navigated the 1.944-mile circuit in 1:17.978 (89.748 mph), shattering the record of 1:23.694 that Michael Galati set in 2001 on a different tire compound. It is Archer’s second-career SCCA SPEED World Challenge pole, and first since 1991, when he was last a series regular.
“I saw [Max] Angelelli coming behind me and he was using me as the rabbit. But, I was using him as the pusher,” Archer said of the session. “He thought he was helping himself, but he helped me more because I had to drive hard to stay ahead of him. I told [crew chief] Will [Moody] this morning and we talked about it. I said, ‘I can’t see us doing better than an 18.3. I just don’t see that happening.’ He said, ‘Well, you have one shot. Just go out there and drive as hard as you can drive.’ He put a new setup on it this morning and it got through the turns really well. I have been real impressed with the way Will has worked this weekend to get me in the game.”
Archer knows his key to winning Sunday is preserving his equipment.
“Tires, tires, tires. You’ve got to take care of your tires,” he added. “My dad taught me when I was young, ‘If you take care of your car, it will take care of you.’ And, there is no track that I know of where that is more true than this track here.”
Angelelli, driving the No. 16 Team Cadillac/Mobil 1/Motorola/Bose Cadillac CTS-V, got to within one hundredth of Archer, but could not improve on his 1:17.988 (89.736 mph). This is the second-straight event with a qualifying margin of one hundredth or less. Last weekend, at Infineon Raceway, Phil McClure and Wolf Henzler tied for the fastest time. McClure ended up with the pole after setting the time earlier in the session.
Champion Racing’s Randy Pobst and Michael Galati will occupy the second row in their Audi Certified Pre-Owned Audi RS 6s. Pobst’s best lap was 1:18.176 (89.521 mph), with Galati just 0.040-second behind. Phil McClure qualified his Aggregate Industries/3R-Racing Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 fifth, with a 1:18.311 (89.366 mph).
Archer is the fifth different pole winner in the five races thus far in 2004. The first-ever pole for the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe also marks the fourth different pole-winning car in 2004.
