Vijay Angelo and Nils Baker responded to the call for a 700 Kg class in the Privilege GT Championship......but didn't receive much support. Vijay has forwarded this document as a suggestion for such a category, to be run as a separate championship. He invites your responses.
CONCEPT:
A CHAMPIONSHIP DESIGNED TO CATER FOR THE VARIETY OF LIGHTWEIGHT SPORTS CARS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE.THESE CARS, LIKE THE LOTUS ELISE, VAUXHALL VX 220, CATERHAM 21, STRATHCARRON SC5A AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS, CURRENTLY HAVE NO SERIES SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS STYLE OF CAR. WHILE THE 750 CLUB HAS THE ROADSPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP, THERE IS VERY LITTLE ELSE TO ATTRACT THE AMATUER COMPETITORS WHO WOULD LIKE TO RACE THESE CARS.
TO FILL THIS GAP WE PROPOSE A SERIES BASED LOOSELY ON THE PRIVELEGE INSURANCE GT 700 KILO 2 LITRE CLASS. HOWEVER TO EXTEND THE APPEAL AND NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE CARS WE WOULD WIDEN THE REGS TO INCORPORATE A TARGET POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO. CURRENTLY WE ARE LOOKING AT 300 BHP PER TON. THIS WOULD ALLOW CARS RENDERED EITHER UNCOMPETITIVE OR INELIGIBLE BY THE 700 KILO , 2 LITRE RULE TO JOIN.
AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD:
TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE QUALITY OF ENTRY AND EQUALITY OF THE FIELD, THE ORGANISERS WOULD ISSUE A LIST OF ELIGIBLE VEHICLES, THE SPECIFICATIONS AND PERMITTED MODIFICATIONS HAVING BEEN CAREFULLY WORKED OUT PRIOR TO THEIR INCLUSION, TO ENSURE THAT ALL MAKES ARE ON AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD.
OUR PRIMARY TOOL TO ENSURE EQUALITY WOULD BE THE USE OF BALLAST. THIS WOULD NOT TAKE THE FORM OF SUCCESS BALLAST. WEIGHT PENALTIES WOULD BE APPLIED TO A PARTICULAR MAKE OF VEHICLE TO KEEP THE ENTIRE FIELD AS EQUAL AS POSSIBLE IN PERFORMANCE. WE WOULD NOT SEEK TO PENALISE A GOOD DRIVER , BUT A PARTICULAR MAKE OF CAR THAT APPEARED TO HAVE AN ADVANTAGE BY DESIGN.
PROPOSED ELIGIBLE CARS:
OUR CURRENT SHORTLIST OF ELIGIBLE CARS IS AS FOLLOWS.
LOTUS ELISE
CATERHAM 21
VAUXHALL VX 220
LOTUS 340R
STRATHCARRON SC5A
ARIEL ATOM
GINETTA G4
THERE IS STILL SOME THOUGHT GOING ON CONCERNING HOW TO EQUALISE HARDTOP CARS (LOTUS ELISE, CATERHAM 21) WITH CONVERTIBLES (LOTUS 340R, STRATHCARRON)
MODIFICATIONS:
AT THIS STAGE THE REGULATIONS ARE IN DEVELOPMENT, AND NEED FURTHER RESEARCH. HOWEVER WE ARE LOOKING AT EACH MAKE DEVELOPING A KIT OF PARTS APPROVED BY THE ORGANISERS, AND DESIGNED TO MAKE ALL CARS COMPETITIVE. IN OUR EARLY DISCUSSIONS WITH MANUFACTURERS THIS PROPOSAL HAS BEEN REASONABLY WELL RECEIVED, THOUGH NOT, I'M SURE, JUST SO THAT THEY CAN SELL MORE PARTS, AS WE HAVE REQUESTED FAIRLY HEAVY DISCOUNTS FOR REGISTERED CHAMPIONSHIP ENTRANTS.
THESE KITS WOULD INCLUDE AERODYNAMICS , BRAKES, SAFETY EQUIPMENT (ROLL CAGES ETC.) WHEELS ETC. THE PRECISE DETAILS OF EACH KIT STILL TO BE WORKED OUT.
AS FAR AS ENGINE MODS ARE CONCERNED THE USE OF TUNERS WOULD BE FREE BUT THE ALLOWED MODIFICATIONS WOULD BE HEAVILY CONTROLLED. WE HAD CONSIDERED ASSIGNING A SINGLE TUNER PER MAKE OR ADDING THE ENGINE TO THE KIT OF PARTS, BUT FOUND THIS IMPRACTICAL. THE REASON BEHIND THIS IS THE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CARS USING THE ROVER K SERIES ENGINE. THIS ENGINE HAS MANY TUNERS AND A NUMBER OF PROSPECTIVE RACERS WILL HAVE ALREADY HAD THEIR ENGINES TUNED, AND BY A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT TUNERS.
FORMAT:
WE ARE LOOKING AT 12 RACES OVER 30 MINUTES DURATION. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF 1 OR 2 LONGER DISTANCE RACES TO REMAIN IN KEEPING WITH THE GT THEME. OUR RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT THIS WOULD BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FORMAT, AS THE PEOPLE LOOKING TO RACE WITH THE KIND OF INVESTMENT INVOLVED ARE NOT INTERESTED IN INVESTING THE TIME OR MONEY NEEDED FOR A TEN LAP RACE, ESPECIALLY AS AT SOME CIRCUITS THIS COULD LAST LESS THAN TEN MINUTES.
WE WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE MEETING TO THREE CONSECUTIVE DAYS OR LESS, SINCE WE EXPECT MOST COMPETITORS TO BE PROFESSIONAL FAMILY PEOPLE AND TO HAVE CONSTRAINTS ON TIME FOR AN AMATUER SPORT. AN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TASK, WE REALISE, BUT NEVERTHELESS A TARGET TO AIM FOR.
CONCLUSION:
WE REALISE THERE IS A LONG WAY TO GO IN BOTH DEVELOPING THE PRINCIPAL OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP AS WELL AS THE SPECIFIC REGULATIONS, BUT WE BELIEVE WE HAVE THE BONES OF A SUCCESSFUL SERIES. OUR DISCUSSIONS WITH PROSPECTIVE MANUFACTURERS AND COMPETITORS HAVE BEEN VERY POSITIVE. TO TAKE THIS FURTHER WHAT WE REQUIRE IS THE SUPPORT OF AN ORGANISING CLUB INTERESTED IN RUNNING THIS SERIES. ONCE WE HAVE THIS WE BELIEVE IT WILL BEGIN TO TAKE MORE SHAPE. THIS WILL ALSO ALLOW US TO PRESS THE MANUFACTURER AND COMPETITOR INTEREST BEYOND THE ACADEMIC LEVEL IT IS AT NOW.
