Milka Duno And Andy Wallace Finish 2nd At Mid-Ohio
CITGO Racing’s Milka Duno and Andy Wallace brought home a 2nd place finish in their No.2 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype at the Mid-Ohio Road Racing Classic at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this Saturday, August 7th, 2004.
The 2nd place finish earned Milka, Andy and CITGO Racing a podium visit in victory circle immediately following the race. This podium appearance marks the 2nd podium for CITGO Racing with Milka in only the first seven races. The first podium came with their win at the Grand Prix of Miami in February.
Race day started with a final 40-minute practice session that saw both Milka and Andy behind the wheel. This session was Andy’s first time in the car since the Thursday test session. Andy was away all day Friday practicing for another sports car race in Canada, so the traditionally-shared set-up duties were conducted entirely by Milka during Friday’s 2 practice sessions and qualifying session.
Shortly after Andy got in the car he radioed in to the team that he felt that the set-up on the car was about as perfect as it could possibly be. Having a driver say this doesn’t happen very often, if ever and the fact that Andy made this statement is an amazing tribute to the work of his co-driver Milka and the team.
The race started at 5:31pm EST with Milka starting the first stint. She started 12th overall and with very clean quick laps increased her position as high as 9th and after 38 laps brought the car in under caution and handed it over to Andy.
Andy would run complete to the chequered flag through 5 caution flags, taking the car up to 2nd, back down to 3rd and then finishing 2nd.
“Everyone worked so hard this weekend for this result, it was a fantastic achievement for the team,” said Milka. “We have a few minor changes to make to the car and then we hope to do one better next time. I feel really good that Andy was pleased with the set-up work we did on Friday. This is our second podium for CITGO and I’m really excited for them because they have been so wonderful and supportive.”
“The car was actually a lot better than it has been in previous races,” said Andy. “The team has worked really hard since our last race at Daytona and we tested at Birmingham International Raceway and Virginia International Raceway as well and got the car better balanced. Late in this race the car was really good and I was able to pick cars ahead of me off one by one. All the people at Crawford have done so much work since the last race, I am really, really happy with them the car feels really good now!”
