A BMW spokesperson couldn’t confirm or deny the story, but it is believed that the Bell Motorsports BMW M3 entry at Daytona is being prepared by PTG with a V8 engine.
Logic suggests that PTG and Schnitzer will be installing V8s for 2001. PTG have been testing at Sebring in the run-up to (a late departure by air to) Adelaide.
Since posting this item, two readers have confirmed that there are two M3 V8s being prepared for 2001 at PTG, and that Tom Milner is expecting much more torque from this engine compared with the straight six. Power isn't expected to be markedly greater owing to the restrictors.
"We're building it for a privateer team to run in the Grand Am Series," said Milner, in an article by Peter Brock in 'BIMMER' magazine.
It still isn’t totally clear whether the V8s are only destined for the Grand-Am. The first two certainly seem to be.
