Michael Lewis reported only minor injuries after being involved in a fire during Saturday’s 35th Annual Trans-Am Rumble at the Road at Road America, during the Grand Prix of Road America Presented by the Chicago Tribune weekend. Lewis’ No. 12 Jaguar XKR suffered a fuel-line failure on lap 19 of the 25-lap Trans-Am event, causing the car to burst into flames.
“Everything’s fine,” said Lewis. “I’m a little singed from all the flame in the cockpit, but I am generally okay. It was a broken fuel line, so the flames got hot, really fast. I was trying to get up the hill to the corner worker station, but couldn't quite get there.
“I’d like to thank the Champ Car Safety Team,” added Lewis. “The car is not good, but it could have been much worse if not for their outstanding efforts.”
Lewis finished a career best third in points last year. Lewis’ sole victory in Trans-Am competition came at Road America in 2001, making him the first driver in more than a decade to win a Trans-Am race in a fuel-injected car.
