Corvette Takes Seventh Straight GTS Victory in 2004 Gavin And Beretta Win For Chevrolet At Mosport International Raceway
The General Motors Chevrolet Corvette Racing team took top honors in the GTS class in Sunday's American Le Mans Series event at Mosport International Raceway. Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta took their third win of the season in the No.4 Compuware Corvette C5-R, while Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell were close behind in the No.3 Compuware Corvette C5-R. The victory is Corvette's seventh straight of the year.
"On an uncharacteristically beautiful day at Mosport, the fans saw quite a show," said Doug Fehan, GM's program manager for Corvette Racing. "The Corvettes battled nose-to-tail for the entire race and in the end the No.4 car was able to pull ahead for the victory. It would appear the No.4 Corvette team has broken their jinx."
After qualifying 1-2 with only 12 thousandths of one second separating the two Corvettes, Oliver Gavin remained in control of the No.4 Corvette C5-R from the start and his car never surrendered the lead. Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell closed the gap from 16 seconds down to just a car length of distance in the final minutes. Gavin held off O'Connell for the last laps and brought the No.4 Corvette team their first win since Lime Rock.
"Johnny was pushing very hard at the end and I'm happy that we were able to stay in front," said Gavin. "It's a great win for everyone on the No.4 team. We haven't had the best bit of luck lately and I'm proud for the team for the work they did."
O'Connell's pace increased throughout his final stint.
"We're still strong in the championship so Ron and I are very happy and we send our congratulations to Oliver and Olivier," said O'Connell. "I was very impressed with the work that our race engineer, Steve Cole, and our Michelin engineer, Donnie Wilson, did to figure out the optimum setup for our Corvette. The car was the best it's been all weekend and it was very fun to drive."
The Corvette Racing team will return to the track on August 22 at Road.
