Duno & Lammers To Start 3rd, Wallace & Stewart To Start 15th
CITGO Racing’s two cars will start 3rd and 15th on the grid for the start of the Sahlen’s 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York on Friday, August 13, 2004. Milka Duno and Jan Lammers’ No.2 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype will start the race in 3rd while the Andy Wallace and Tony Stewart driven No.20 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype will start 15th.
The positions that each car will start the race in were not determined by a qualifying session but by Team Point Standings so far this year as Thursday’s qualifying session was cancelled due to rain. The No.2 is 3rd in Team Point Standings so will then start 3rd. The No.20, with this race being only its second race, is currently 19th in Team Point Standings but will start 15th as several of the cars listed ahead of it in the standings are not entered in this race.
The day started with cloudy skies and intermittent rain but not to the extent that would cause the two practice sessions to be cancelled. In the first practice session this morning the No.20 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype was the fastest of the session and the No.2 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype was 7th quickest. In the second session under heavy rain the No.20 was 3rd fastest and the No.2 was 10th.
Almost immediately after the second practice session the Rolex Sports Car Series decided to cancel the qualifying session for safety reasons as the ran began to fall harder than it had all day.
For Friday’s race, Milka will start in the No.2 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype and Tony will start in the No.20 CITGO Pontiac Crawford Daytona Prototype.
“I’m very happy to be starting the race in 3rd,” said Milka. “I would have preferred to earn this position, but racing is racing and I will take every advantage offered. I’ve been starting from mid-pack for most of the season always fighting to gain position before handing the car over but now I’ll be in the lead pack and I’ll be fighting just as hard to stay there.”
