Rocketsports Sweeps Top-Three In Qualifying
Four-time Motorock Trans-Am Champion, Tommy Kendall, captured his 44th career Motorock Trans-Am Series pole. Kendall navigated the No. 11 Jaguar R Performance XKR around the 1.647 mile temporary street course in 1:13.072 (81.072 mph). Teammate, Tomy Drissi, turned a lap of 1:13.273 in the No. 5 TAXI –The Movie Jaguar XKR to secure a second place starting position for Saturdays Cytomax Sports Drink 100. Rocketsports owner, Paul Gentilozzi, recovered from braking problems in morning practice to secure the third place starting position.
Friday’s record setting lap gave Kendall his fifth pole of the 2004 season. After last weeks win at Road America the Jaguar production based engine proved it can get the job done. “Things are coming together at the right time for us,” said Kendall. “We’ve had two trouble free races in a row and we’re building consistency. We have a small edge with the altitude because of the fuel injected AJ-V8. The engine corrects the fuel flow automatically, unlike the carburetted engine where you have to adjust the jets manually.
“I am having fun this year and I decided to not worry about the championship. In the past I was so focused on the championships that I never had fun. This year I am focused on enjoying myself and at the end of the season we’ll see where we end up in the points.”
Today’s front row qualifying effort marked Drissi’s seventh top-10 of 2004. The combination of Drissi and the No. 5 crew have proven a winner. “The car was very comfortable,” said Drissi. I’m happy with second place knowing the car has more in it. We didn’t want to use up the tires so we just waited to see what happen with the rest of the field.”
Experience on this Denver street course proved invaluable as Gentilozzi was still able to turn the third fastest lap of the qualifying session despite braking problems. “The car was miserable,” described Gentilozzi. “I haven’t been focused on the set up. So we’ll get it fixed and have something for them in the race.”
