Gentilozzi Ties Donohue – Jaguar Wins Manufactures’ Championship
Three-time Motorock Trans-Am Series Champion, Paul Gentilozzi, went to victory for the fifth time in 2004 after winning the Cytomax Sports Drink 100. Gentilozzi capitalized on an early race incident to take the lead on lap two of 61. Gentilozzi’s win places him in a tie for most career wins with 29 set by the late Mark Donohue. Four-time champion, Tommy Kendall, rallied back from a black flag penalty to finish third powered by the Jaguar AJ-V8 production based engine. Tomy Drissi recovered from the lap two incident to finish seventh in the No. 5 TAXI – The Movie Jaguar XKR.
Gentilozzi’s win was Jaguars seventh victory of the 2004 season. The British car company won the title previously in 1978, 2001 and 2003.
Even after winning for the fifth time in 2004 and tying Donohue’s 33 year old record, Gentilozzi was humble. The Rocketsports Racing owner was quick to point out the differences of his wins and Donohue’s. “Donohue was a great race driver,” declared Gentilozzi. “He won more races in less starts than anybody else. To win 29 times in 55 races is an amazing record. I’ve won 29 in 196 so you really can’t compare. It’s a record for the moment but I believe Tommy (Kendall) will also win 29 races, or more.”
For the second straight race, Kendall drove from deep in the field to finish in the top three. An early penalty forced Kendall to push the No. 11 Jaguar R Performance XKR hard setting a record lap time of 1:12.313. “In some ways those races are more fun,” described Kendall after racing through the field. “I drove as hard as I could lap after lap. This car rewards you the harder you drive it.”
After leading the first lap, Drissi and Kendall got together sending the No. 5 Jaguar to the rear after spinning. Drissi recovered and extended his top-10 finishing streak to five. “I know Tommy didn’t spin me on purpose,” said Drissi. “He isn’t that kind of driver. I’m disappointed because we didn’t finish better but we did gain points on Diaz.”
