Kennard Crushes The Opposition To Take 2nd Spa Pole
Jonathan Kennard has secured his second pole position of the weekend with a crushing display in qualifying for the final round of the Visma Software Formula Palmer Audi Championship at Spa this weekend. The 19 year-old championship leader stunned the field with a time more than three seconds quicker than the second placed driver on a damp but drying track.
Four of the top six drivers ventured out on wet, grooved tyres for the 30 minutes session around the stunning 4.32 mile long Grand Prix circuit, although Jonathan admitted it was a marginal decision that saw him take that option. Second placed driver, Belgian F3000 star Loic Deman was also on wets but could do nothing to close the 3.081s gap between himself and Kennard. The first driver to gamble on slick tyres, Russian Alexander Turumin was next and will line up on the second row for tomorrow's final round alongside Rob Jenkinson, the only driver who can mathematically beat Kennard to the Championship title.
"I'm pretty amazed really," said Jonathan. "We chose to go out on wets, although it was a tough decision because we could see the track was drying out but it was obviously the right choice. I think I could have gone quicker towards the end of the session, but there was a few problems with traffic, but generally it worked out pretty well."
The weekend's first race, Round 11 will take place this afternoon at 13.50, in which Jonathan will start from pole, with Round 12 taking place tomorrow at 10.50.
