Hinchcliffe Moves From Mid-Pack To Score Top Five Result
First year Star Mazda series pilot James Hinchcliffe (Noco Racing, Mobil 1, Pit Fit Training, AIM Autosport No.98), had a tough event this past weekend as the Canadian rookie could only manage a fifth place finish. Though disappointed with the on paper result, Hinchcliffe and his AIM Autosport squad had the drive of the day passing eleven cars after qualifying trouble at the Road Atlanta race course in Braselton.
Hinchcliffe would need to recover from a difficult qualifying session, which would find him mired back on the starting grid. "I knew I would have my work cut out for me today after qualifying in the middle of the pack," Hinchcliffe said. "We discovered a disconnected plug lead after qualifying so I was starting around some drivers that I haven't raced with much. Fortunately I was able to fight past six cars on the opening lap and was back racing with some people that I've had good battles with this year and finally make my way up to fifth at the end."
After the opening lap where he passed six drivers, Hinchcliffe had an uneventful event until mid race when a great battle with a fellow competitor. The duo went wheel-to-wheel and side-by-side for six consecutive corners bringing the crowd to there feet. Hinchcliffe eventually squeaked by and drove to his fifth place result. “All we needed was a mid race yellow to close the field up and I am sure we had a shot at the podium. It seems whenever I am leading I get yellows to eliminate my gap and then when I finally need it, everyone plays nice and we had 30 green laps!”
Heading into the final round of the championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Hinchcliffe remains in the championship hunt with 388 points, 36 points behind current point’s leader. Hinchcliffe is also in a tight battle for Rookie-of-the-Year honours and will look to claim that title at the final event.
