On December 18, it was announced that Rob Dyson has purchased two new Riley & Scott Mk III C prototypes. The most successful North American team in the modern sportscar era will take delivery of the first chassis after the Rolex 24 at Daytona in February. The new car is set to debut in the ALMS race at Sebring on March 17, although the first ALMS race at Texas Motor Speedway could still see the car run there for the first time.
Significantly, the Mklll C will see Dyson Racing moving back to an ALMS program (in conjunction with the Grand-Am), with the distinct possibility that they can recreate the success of 1999, when EF-R was the first ALMS Drivers Champion.
“Our success with R&S speaks for itself,” said Rob Dyson. “Since taking delivery of the first Mk III in 1995, we have won six drivers’ championships, four team championships, and a total of 28 races. Most remarkably for a two-car team, one or both of the cars have finished in the top five in 70% of the cars’ total starts”.
“These will be the fourth and fifth R&S prototype chassis we’ve purchased, and they truly are the gifts that keep on giving”, Dyson continued. “Chassis 002 now has more than 45,000 racing miles, and that doesn’t include testing. It’s a testament to the solid engineering of the piece, the great work of Team Manager Pat Smith, our crew, and our other key suppliers including Goodyear and Lozano Brothers Racing Engines.”
R&S President Bob Riley explained that, “Rob and our other customers made it clear that they wanted an updated car, using the same basic hybrid construction of steel and composite panels. New processes, including laser cutting the steel. will make the chassis even more effective, while retaining the exceptional stiffness, long life, and ease of repair that have always been the cars’ advantages.”
Dyson Racing will begin the 2000 season at Daytona with chassis 002 and 010 from the Mkll line-up. 002 Series C will be delivered to them after Daytona, with C001 going to Robinson Racing.
