More details of the inaugural ELMS have emerged since the rush to get the news out last Friday.
All of the ELMS races will be 2 hours 45 minutes long, except for Estoril, which will be a 1000 Km event. Sebring and the Petit Le Mans have long been known to be optional events for the ELMS. Adelaide in early December is an invitational race for ELMS teams.
The start money of 5 000 Euros is off-set by the entry fee of 4 000 Euros for the Prototype classes (LMP900 and LMP675), 3 000 Euros for the GT classes.
10% of the prize fund (150 000 Euros per race) will be set aside for a privateers’ fund, as is in the ALMS. Privateers will need to compete in all five European rounds to qualify for the fund. A travel package is being created for Sebring and the Petit Le Mans.
A Championship sponsor hasn’t been announced yet, but news is expected before the end of January.
Sky Sports will cover the five ELMS races live. "Last year the ALMS produced superb racing and we recognize the tremendous following it has gained. We look forward to bringing some great racing to the Sky screens," commented Roger Moody, Commercial Manager for Sky Sports.
The series begins at Donington Park on April 14, coincidentally the location of the first race of the ISRS / SRWC / FIA SCC in 1997. It will be fascinating to watch as teams announce their plans for their Prototype / GT racing in Europe in 2001.
