An unusual turn of events today sees media outlets receive a release from the MG Rover Group which is already out of date by the time it arrives by post.
Suggestions here that Arena Motorsport would manage the two MGs at Le Mans were accurate until January 22, but now Chamberlain Motorsport will handle the operation. The two cars have five nominated drivers already – Julian Bailey, Anthony Reid, Warren Hughes, Kevin McGarrity and Jonny Kane.
Bailey and Reid are highly experienced at Le Mans, the Scot securing a third place in 1990, while Bailey has led the race for Nissan. The other three will be rookies this year.
Reid and Hughes will also pilot the X20 MG Touring Car Project, due to race in the Touring Class later this year.
Jack Cunningham at Chamberlain Motorsport was suitably delighted with the news: "We are very pleased to have been selected to be part of this exciting programme. MG Rover produce fine road cars and so Lola's race vehicles compliment that exceedingly well. We will do our utmost to prepare and race the MG Lola to the best of our abilities."
Chamberlain have an extraordinary record of bringing Vipers home to the flag at Le Mans. This time, they’ll be looking to bring the MG Prototypes home at the head of the relatively new LMP675 class. Likely opposition will come from last year’s winning Lola, the Gunnar Racing Lola – Porsche, the French WRs and the ROC VWs.
