The Kigema Sports Organisation Srl (KSO) has been appointed by the FIA World Motor Sport Council to organise the 2001 FIA European Touring Car Championship.
40 teams from all over Europe have contacted KSO asking for information on the Super Touring and the Super Production Championships. They will have discovered long ago that full season participants in the Championship will compete for prize money (drivers and teams) to be divided between the Super Touring Championship (STC) and the Super Production Championship (SPC).
Drivers in the FIA Super Touring Championship will be categorised as “Pro” or “Am” on the basis of their racing CVs, the technical specifications of their cars and the experience of their teams. The five best "Am" drivers at each meeting, classified by adding the points obtained in the two STC races, will be allocated prize money. In addition, a bonus will be awarded at each race meeting to the "Am" driver who scores the most points in the overall championship classification, adding the points obtained in the two STC races.
In the Super Production Championship, the three best young drivers, racing in the Under 25 (year old) category, will be awarded prize money after each race.
Nordauto’s Fabrizio Giovanardi will be one of the top seeds for the FIA European Touring Car Championship STC title. He will compete in the series at the wheel of one of the team’s Alfa Romeo 156s, aiming to win his fifth Super Touring crown in five years (Spain ’97, Italy ’98 and ’99, Euro STC 2000). “To race in the new FIA championship will be a great boost for my motivation. I love the idea of the reverse grid for the second race; I like very much to fight and recover.”
Roberto Ravaglia is setting up his own team. As a driver he won the only Touring Car World Championship ever held (1987) and three European titles, always in BMWs. He will enter two E46 BMWs in the in the 2001 FIA European Touring Car Championship SPC. “For me it’s a completely new challenge,” he said. “But even as a team owner, I still have the same ambitions I had as a driver: I want to win!”
The 2002 ETCC could well be run to 2001 BTCC regs., rather than the current Super Touring and Super Production, according to UK sources. This might well open the doors to a wider ranging Championship in the future.
