Marc Laffeas has been looking at the systems that will be used to select the entry for the 69th running of the race.
Each entrant can apply for two cars as a maximum (within the same group).
The selection procedure will be based upon:
The fame of the competitor
Previous efforts at Le Mans
The competitor’s previous record
Participation in the ALMS
Likelihood of competing in a race prior to Le Mans
The drivers / the cars
Technical interest
Relationship with “the ACO and its environment regarding law and finance issues”.
Marc Laffeas suggests that Chrysler / Oreca can use two of their three “pre-selected” (Viper) entries for their LMP cars, and then have their third car run as an invitational entry. To switch categories, their Competitor’s Licence and the make of the car must be exactly the same as in 2000, and they will need permission from the organisers.
Nurburgring, PLM and Adelaide success means that Dick Barbour technically has three pre-selected entries too, but using the above system, he can (like Oreca) also have the maximum two pre-selected entries, then hope to have a third car invited (if he wants to run three).
Audi have three pre-selected entries, but have indicated that they will only run two factory cars.
With 100 entries expected again, there are going to be 50 disappointed entrants once more.
