There will be just one car fitted with the Korean tyre brand, but this is a news item because of its potential long term significance.
The car is the #30 Mastercar Ferrari F355. This entry should have been a Shelton F360, but the decision was taken in December that the new car couldn’t be readied in time for a 24 hour race, so an association was sought with the Italian Mastercar team.
Tony Ring – Eurosport commentator and Kumho representative, as well as a driver here – persuaded Mastercar that “it would be beneficial to run Kumho tyres.”
Ring has been testing Kumhos for two years, the favoured compound here one that should last them for double stints. They obviously didn’t make the Test Days, so they’ve yet to try the tyres on a banked track, but Tony Ring is quietly confident that Rolex week will go well. It won’t be the fastest GT car by any means, but they’ll be working hard at a strong finish.
