They say racing improves the breed. Apparently this includes public relations, at least for this weekend. To the credit of GM, they wasted little time in tracking down Andrew Cotton and myself with regards to our
comments about access to the Corvette team. Pat Schutte of GM Communications took Andrew directly over to the Vette pits for a conversation with Scot Keller. There were apologies as well as an explanation that they (GM) have had a number of problems with the addition of the Earnhardts to the team. They didn't expect such an interest and were overwhelmed by requests and such a large number of fans. (Oh really ? isn't that why they are here in the first place?)
I was paid a visit by Wally Reese who, the motorsports specialist with Chevrolet Communications. To his credit, Reese explained the situation and also that this was his first time dealing with so many international journalists. He was also direct in his comments that this is an area that GM and Chevrolet need to improve and hopefully will have straightened out by Sebring. While it was regrettable that the situation had to come to this, GM deserves high marks for addressing the situation so quickly.
Powerful, this internet thing. How satisfying that real progress seems to have been made on this subject.
