Briefer tales from Daytona will appear here as news items, with longer accounts as separate pages within the Daytona material.
Rob Schirle: “What can I say? One car crashed as an innocent bystander (#91, the GTS car), the one I expected little or no problem with (chassis 088, the #92 ex-Barbour GT3R) had two pre-race incidents, both damaging the right rear of the car - the second accident hadn’t even turned the exhaust pipe blue after the new one was fitted.
“In the race, we had settled down and we were looking in good shape, then all of a sudden the motor let go. It seems the same thing happened with the Red Bull car - a dropped valve.
“The other car (#65) didn’t really miss a beat all weekend, with the exception of driver error. Heinrich Langfermann caused the first off with PK Sport’s car, causing damage to both and losing us one hour. The second incident was during the night when Rob Orcutt hit another car with the right rear wheel. We replaced the wheel and sent him only to have the driveshaft break that lap, which was obviously a legacy of the crash. We changed that and then at 4.00am the release bearing let go, probably due to a driver riding the clutch. We changed that and finally finished this difficult race – in 42nd position.
“Roll on Sebring.”
Two Cirtek GT3Rs are likely to be entered in the 12 Hours.
The photograph shows the #92 car on Wednesday morning, before its race livery was applied.
