Orbit Porsche |
Penalised |
|
Some might argue that there is some justice in the world. The #43 Orbit Racing Porsche that nipped out of the queue at the end of the Rolex 24 to complete an extra lap and thereby secure seventh place has been penalised by GA officials – for running a fifth driver.
Officials have penalized both the team and fifth driver, Tony Kester, for the infraction. Orbit Racing lost 15 points in the Team Owner Championship standings and was fined $2,500. Kester was also fined $2,500 for entering a car he was not listed to drive.
The #43 car seems to retain its seventh place, fourth in class, even though its move at the end was described as “dangerous” by one team owner. The car that would have taken fourth was the G&W Porsche, which was sitting in the queue with nowhere to go, just behind the Corvettes and the class winning #31 car.
An alternative view expressed to this office was "what were the rest of the
field doing driving like it was 'Sunday' during a green flag lap. I mean when is the race over...on the next to last lap!? They were racing for position and the field was blocking them during a hot lap."
An interesting point of view. Thank you. The winning Corvette was in driveshaft trouble, which was the cause of the queue - that and the fact that the Corvettes had their timimg almost down to the second as they crossed the line. 24:00:02.539.
It was Kyle Petty at the wheel of the Orbit car.
