FIA SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP |
11/10/2000 |
THE NEW NAME |
All but confirmed |
|
The news was trickled out on this site last week, but it's now all but confirmed that the SportsRacing World Cup will become the FIA Sportscar Championship in 2001 (subject to the formality of the Sporting Regulations being confirmed).
"We're obviously delighted and proud to announce that the FIA World Motorsports Council have voted for the SportsRacing World Cup to become the FIA Sportscar Championship in 2001," rejoiced John Mangoletsi. "I would like to thank all the constructors, teams, drivers and sponsors who have supported the series over the past four years. They have all helped to create a strong, stable and healthy platform for the championship to be built on further, and their continued professionalism will lead to more close and exciting racing in some of the classic sportscar races that we will run next year and that will in turn meet the status of the new FIA Sportscar Championship. The enthusistic support of the media and the fans has been an important factor in the success and 2001 will bring even bigger quality sports racing car grids for all to enjoy."
The full support of the FIA might be needed next year as the newly-named series faces up to the challenge of the ELMS, but the series' Chairman is clearly anticipating that he can increase the grids in his series in 2001. |
