Matt Johnson and Robert Ross will race a new Lotus Esprit in the GTO category of the Privilege Insurance British GT Championship this year. The Johnsons Motorsport built car should be ready in time for the opening race of the season.
Matt Johnson won the Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta and VW Vento titles, Robert Ross was the 1999 Proton champion, and Johnson Motorsport has won titles in four different one-make categories.
“We've been building the Lotus for about five months now”, said Johnson. “It's going to be very difficult to take on the Porsches and TVRs, but this is a ground-up project and we've even done our own roll cage.”
The engines are being built by Will Gollop, who has prepared Esprit GT(2) engines for several years.
“I think the car will be strong. It will probably take a few races to get on the pace and GTO is going to be fantastic. We've got a lot of experience on the driving front and we're aiming to have some fun as well,” concluded Johnson.
A Porsche beater, along with all those rumoured Tuscan Rs?
