Fabian Roock was an interested observer at Daytona. He was one of the few who had the time to fill in the gaps on his 2001 plans.
“We have nearly finished our new shop at Road Atlanta. I’ve been in this business for ten years and I’ve always wanted a facility at a track. At the Nurburgring, we were close, but we never had full access to the circuit.”
“I want to carry on in the GT class, but GTS is over for me now, at least for the time being. Last year we weren’t so competitive in the ALMS, but we were still second in the Teams Championship. Now we concentrate on the 675 Prototype, which is an interesting engineering exercise. I wil return to Porsche one day, but I want to be at the top of the pile. Porsche tuning is our business, so we’re in daily contact with the factory. But if there is no GT(2) car coming, GT(3) is the way to go. We could still be doing GT(3) this year – it’s not decided yet. People expect me to have a car on the pole and that’s the way I want to go racing.”
“One Prototype (the joint effort with Knighthawk) is not enough for our new facility, but we have interesting plans for the Lola. Our update for the 675 class is not expensive; we alter the bodywork, which will be different to cater for the larger wheels. Elan Composites are doing that work for us. We’re fitting carbon brakes obviously, and the gearbox will have bigger gears, plus the car will have a carbon floor. The complete kit can be provided to teams very reasonably, and I’m expecting approaches from people who want to be competitive. I really see the potential of this class.
“We will be out for the first race, but probably not with the new Judd engine. We might have to have a compromise engine for the first two races. We should have the first engine delivered to us within a week (from now, Ed.).
So here’s another alternative for teams looking to spread their wings for 2001 / 2002. LMP 900 pace for a modest investment on top of SR2 money. Kevin Jeannette at Gunnar Racing has similar plans, while another project is ongoing in Europe, as well as the MG effort for Le Mans of course. Interesting times in sportscar racing, as usual.
