Certainly the comeback of the year was that of Jason Watt last weekend. The Dane won the final Nürburgring F3000 round last year, then a few weeks later a tragic accident happened that seemed to end his racing career and tie him forever to the wheelchair. But the sympathic sportsman never gave up fighting against his fate and won the most important race of his life that put him back into the cockpit of a Panoz Roadstar at the same track. Listen to his relief as he was presented at the SRWC press conference.
"For me this was the first time to sit in a sportscar. I've used the handcontol system already in a Peugeot Supertouring car. But to control 600 bhp in the Dunlop Curve with only a few centimeters of "pedal" way at the steering wheel was a bit more stressful than I thought. I've been a bit nervous at the beginning but then I was taking it easy. On the developing dry line I got more familiar with the car and at the end of my turn I was even matching John Nielsen's times.
"I have to thank the guys of my team a lot because they did a good job with the car by adapting the hand-control-system for my needs in the short time. If somebody would have asked me one month ago 'Would you be able to make a race in a Panoz?' I would have said "Well, I think no." Remember, one year ago the doctors said: 'We don´t know whether the guy will live again,' and now I´m here racing a Panoz.
"What now will follow in my racing career is not determined. I've received a licence from the FIA that allows me to race everything except a F3000 or a F1. I will certainly do the next race of SRWC in Magny-Cours with the Den Bla Avis-team, but whether to focus on sportscars or DTM or a comparable series I cannot say now. It will also depend on the teams & the sponsors. To do a race is one thing, but to give a guy like me a competitive cockpit needs some guts, that not everyone will have."
A very realistic point of view from the young Dane, but a well earned point in the Nürburgring race (10th overall) in his first race in a sportscar is a clear indication that he deserves such a chance. Remember the wet conditions and that the Panoz has no servo-steering then you can imagine what Watt's performance was. |
