A number of Privilege Championship teams were at Silverstone on February 9.
Chamberlain Motorsport gave the Curtis Hayles Motorsport (formerly HKM) GT(2) Viper its first run of the year. The car has been extensively rebuilt by Chamberlain and now appears resplendent in new midnight-blue base colour (photo in due course).
Both Tim Harvey and Rob Wilson were present to drive. The sequential gearbox used last year has been replaced with a conventional unit, although Tim Harvey was sorry to lose it. “The sequential box is certainly the way to go,” he said. “It was brilliant when it worked, and very quick, but there were some reliability issues. The trouble is, now I have to keep remembering to use the clutch again!”
Despite being “in a thousand pieces” only the week before, the Viper ran smoothly on well-worn rubber, setting an unofficial best of around 56 seconds for the National circuit.
The team’s second car, the Viper GTS for the Privilege GTO class, is a likely runner at Le Mans this year in the LM GT category (yes, it is confusing for the layman, with GTS – GTO – GT in the same sentence). “It would be good to do something that’s not been done before,” remarked Tim Harvey of the prospect of taking on the GT3R and GT3RS Porsches. “It also has an excellent chance of winning the class.”
There still seems to be some debate within the team over which of their Vipers to use at Le Mans.
