Adam Simmons and Ben McLoughlin sampled the Harlow Motorsport Porsche 911 GT3R for the first time this year, at Silverstone on February 9. This is the car that Adam Simmons drove with Stephen Watson in the second half of the 2000 season. Cirtek ran the car then, but Harlow Motorsport are running it in 2001.
After a successful period in the late ’80 /early 90s, the Harlow outfit was mothballed for the second half of the last decade, but Adam’s experience in the British GTs last year convinced Len Simmons to dust things off and return to the fray. It won’t be a half-hearted effort either, with Harlow Motorsport also running the Fuller & Fothergill pairing in a second GTO Porsche. “We know it’s going to be tough,” admitted Len. “There are a lot of cars in the class, but we’re looking to do as well here as we did with the Renaults. The team is well funded and we’ve spent a lot of time and money on the car. We see this as a three to four year project, and intend to include some international races in our schedule.”
They’re planning on racing in the Malaysia and Adelaide rounds of the ALMS, and ending up at Daytona for the 24 Hours in 2002. “We had considered a run at Daytona this year, but decided it was too soon,” said Len Simmons. Adam Simmons and Ben McLoughlin were at the Rolex 24 earlier this month, getting an early feel for the Speedway.
Ben McLoughlin showed fine form in a Mantis GTO last year, but has enjoyed the move to a rear-engined Porsche. “It’s very different. It handles in a completely different way, and it is so positive in every respect – the steering, the brakes, everything. I found it a little unnerving to begin with because it moves around a lot more than the Marcos, but it has so much more grip. It is also left hand drive, which is new for me.” With reference to the enormous Mantis bonnet, Ben was also pleased with the view from the cockpit. “It’s strange to be able to see where I’m going!” he said.
In addition to the official pre-season Silverstone test at the end of the month Harlow Motorsport will also be testing with Dunlop in Spain next month.
