Neil Cunningham has confirmed a two-year GT contract with BW Motorsport, to race the team’s Porsche 996 twin turbo in the GT class of the Privilege Insurance British GT Championship.
The GT1-derived 3.2 litre engine has been developed in association with Kremer Racing in Germany. The project was originally expected to race in the second half of the 2000 season, but delays sourcing the right power plant meant that only now is the car about to take to the track for the first time.
Cunningham is finding it hard to contain his excitement at the thought of competing with the new car. “The old 911 was very outdated. This 996 is state-of-the-art and I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on it. I’m confident we can be right up there at the front this year, fighting for the title.”
Shakedown testing in the UK is scheduled for next week.
BW Motorsport will be running a second car this year, a GT3R in the GTO class. Drivers have yet to be confirmed.
