Dominic Chappelle is in the US at the moment, negotiating with a very large games manufacturer, but he couldn’t resist an opportunity to explain where his Interactive Sportscar Championship has got to.
“We’ve just signed our ninth team, and we’re so pleased with the entry we have and the probability of future entries later on this year, we’re probably going to go with nine or ten teams to start the season. As other cars become available, we’ll open up the other two or three slots.”
The list that Dominic provided makes for a very interesting line-up, with still two months to go before the action starts:
Atomic Kitten Corvettes – two Motorola Cup cars to start the season, with two C5-Rs due in August. (“Roger Walters has put in a massive effort to make this project happen.”)
Brookspeed Vipers – as already announced.
CSG Motorsport Listers – as announced earlier today.
Mike Haines Racing Lotus Esprits – three drivers have signed already.
NCK Racing – two Marcos LM600s, which will start testing in March.
Cirtek Motorsport – “Rob Schirle has the blessing of Porsche Cars GB, and he’ll be starting the year with two 996 Porsches, which will be turbocharged later in the season.”
Stealth – the second car is in build now.
West Surrey Racing – “Dome have given their permission to use the Honda NSXs, but as Neil Brown is very busy, they’re looking to get Mugen to rebuild the engines in Japan.”
Ray Mallock – “They have one Saleen S7 ready, but as each team needs two cars, we’re happy to let them use a Mustang until they can get a second S7 ready.”
Koenigsegg – the Swedish cars could make up the tenth team (see news item dated Jan 26).
Aston Martin and Ferrari 550 entrants have expressed an interest in racing in the ISC later in the season, while “Maserati and Jaguar have also shown interest”.
Dunlop have signed up to a long term contract to supply tyres for the series, with Dunlop’s Tony Gelhome masterminding the negotiations with ISC. Fuel will be supplied by ‘76’, who will make a fuel available that is suitable for turbocharged and normally aspirated engines.
Dominic Chappelle was overjoyed with the latest developments as regards TV coverage. “We’ll have a mid-week slot on terrestrial TV, after the evening news. I can’t say which channel yet, but we’ll also have a weekend slot on terrestrial TV for four of the races. All the events will be covered live on a satellite channel. It’s not on Sky, but it will be available through the SKY network. SKY have sold over 5 million ‘boxes’ in the UK, and will sell several million more this year.”
Finally, after fending off jibes from other series for many months, Chappelle was confident enough to make these remarks. “We bring a very professional team into this, and we’ve been working solidly at it over many months. We’ve stuck to our principles, while the organisers of another series have gone back on their promises. Why have the teams got to pay a £6 000 entry fee? That was returned to them last year. They’re making money from the Channel 4 coverage, and that money should be there to help the teams. We’re the new people coming into this, and we haven’t finished yet. Watch this space.”
