Concerns have been expressed in some quarters than the ‘top’ class in the Privilege GT Championship may see reduced numbers this year (some entrants have aligned themselves with the ISC).
A run down of the likely GT class runners reveals the following:
1 Marcos Mantara
1 Lister Storm
2 TVR Speed 12s
1 Saleen S7
1 CHM / Chamberlain Viper
1 Porsche 996 Turbo
1 ‘works-blessed’ Ultima
1 Chevrolet Camaro
1 Ferrari F40
That’s ten unconfirmed but highly probable runners, with more to come.
Filling in some of the details, Cor Euser has indicated a desire to run at least one Mantara from the UK. His FIA GT (and therefore Privilege) plans may become clearer after a meeting in Paris today.
Lister Cars announced the David Warnock / Mike Jordan entry weeks ago, and “Scania would like Junior (Ian McKellar) and I to compete in about three Privilege races that don’t clash with the FIA Championship,” reveals Jamie Campbell-Walter.
The two TVR Speed 12s are definite entries, just one driver to be confirmed in the Countdown Developments car (with Steve Hyde).
Saleen? “The Privilege Championship is still the premier national Sportscar / GT series,” says John Hindhaugh at Ray Mallock Ltd. “With the Lister, the 996 Porsche, the Viper etc., the level of professionalism is what we want to be racing against.” Nothing confirmed at RML yet, but a Saleen (two?) should be taking on Lister, Viper, Porsche, TVR etc.
The Chamberlain / CHM Viper has been testing already, while the Bob Watson 996 twin turbo is likely to have its second driver confirmed shortly.
The Ultima project shows all the signs of a highly professional effort that will be in contention for honours. The Andrew Chester Camaro is back for another attempt at taking on the bigger teams, Ian Flux has already shown the potential of a Ferrari F40, and 2001 should see the return of a (not so) old friend to the Championship – details soon.
Double figures in the GT class, plus a scrapping horde of GTOs, ought to see the Privilege Championship maintain its position in domestic racing.
