Let’s place this in the ALMS section, although there are implications for Le Mans, the ELMS and Grand Am too.
It was a surprise to see no sign of a Saleen S7 in the Texas entry. The official statement reveals that ‘interest in the S7Rs has been so significant since Laguna Seca that Saleen decided recently to give first priority to customers teams, thereby delaying Speedlab’s own 2001 effort’.
This means that Chris Bingham’s Park Place Racing will campaign an S7R in a full Grand Am season, partnered by Saleen’s Ron Johnson.
A joint Konrad Motorsport / Saleen effort will begin in the ALMS at Sebring, with a car for Franz himself and a Saleen driver yet to be named.
Konrad has purchased ‘another car’ to run in ‘a number of races’ in the ELMS (there are only five). Drivers are still to be announced. Ray Mallock Ltd are likely to run their own (Ecurie Ecosse) programme in the ELMS too, although this is a strong rumour rather than fact, at this stage.
“With the demand exceeding supply until mid-season, this means that Saleen / Allen Speedlab will have to wait until Le Mans before fielding our own team,” explained Steve Saleen.
It is not yet clear exactly how many Saleens could be seeking Le Mans entries, but as many as four or five could be on the ACO’s selection list.
