Jock Peden has been following the Adelaide ALMS saga. He reports that Channel 10 news in Australia announced today that South Australian Premier, John Olson, had cancelled this December's race. Olson stated that the $8 million saved would be spent on the state’s hospital and medical systems. John Olson is thought to have done this to display the state coalition government's care for the people of South Australia. He further stated that the minister responsible had advised the Panoz organisation.
The feeling in Australia is that the race will be reallocated shortly to Perth.
The decision came as a total surprise to Don Panoz. He was “shocked and disappointed” at the announcement. Panoz had just returned to the United States from a 10-day trip to Adelaide to finalize details of the second Australian Le Mans Series event. He heard the news of Olsen's announcement on Friday morning (U.S. Eastern time) at his offices in Georgia.
The inaugural Race of a Thousand Years, held on Dec. 31 2000, attracted 144,000 race fans over the three days of the meeting. Don Panoz said that his organization will begin actively pursuing various options within the Australian market. "We are optimistic that with the success of the inaugural event in Adelaide that we will find a way to bring our racing teams back to Australia," he said.
