Three weeks ago at Daytona, Johnny Mowlem didn’t have a drive for this year. “I felt that Skea Racing might only do a limited programme in 2001, and I needed a permanent drive. I’d met Dale White at Adelaide, and liked him, but at that stage I didn’t think I’d be driving for Petersen Motorsports this year. Then it all happened at Daytona. I talked to Alwin Springer and discussions took place between him and Dale. Petersen Motorsports needed a driver to pair with Bob Wollek, someone with good factory connections, and my name fitted the bill. I’m not a factory driver, but I am in a factory car.”
Johnny hasn’t driven with Bob Wollek before, but “I’m sure I’ll get on very well with him – and learn from him. But I’ve got a lot to bring to the party regarding the car and the tracks.”
The car is the Daytona GT class winner, which has had some aerodynamic modifications since that second place overall. Johnny won’t drive it until the meeting commences at Texas Motor Speedway, and he’s well aware that Alex Job might have a small advantage at the first race. “Sascha (Maassen) will bring a lot of information from his year at Barbour, but Daytona showed that we’re a really top class team. Dale is confident that we can be as quick and professional as anyone. It’s down to us to show that we deserve the same support as Alex Job. With BMW coming, I don’t believe it is in Porsche’s interests to put all their efforts into one team. I’m really looking forward to this.”
Texas took its toll on Johnny last summer, in the Skea 911. He ended up losing his peripheral vision, and the feeling in his hands and feet, after a torrid stint in the heat, but that won’t be a factor this time. “I’d rather drive in the rain than in heat like that. We didn’t have the cooling that the other Porsches had.”
He flies out to Texas on Thursday, delighted at his prospects for 2001. Second place at Le Mans last year was his best result with Skea Racing, but here he is ready to go in the Daytona class winner. The car is reliable, and with Wollek and Mowlem together, there will be no shortage of pace.
The only thing he hasn’t got lined up – yet – is a drive at Le Mans. He’s pictured there last June, with Sascha Maassen.
