ABG Motorsport today confirmed that their second Lexus IS200 in the BTCC Touring Class will be driven by the Brazilian Thomas Erdos. Kurt Luby has been associated with this project since the outset, and will drive the other car.
ABG Team Manager Tim Blake was delighted to make the news public. "I'm convinced that we've got the strongest pair of drivers in the Championship. Both of them are massively experienced, and they'll work extremely well as a pair. Egos aren't involved with these two."
Tommy Erdos showed a natural degree of reluctance to leave his first (or second?) home - GT racing - but is relishing the propect of a rear wheel drive Touring Car. "Tim Blake and ABG Motorsport are both throwing their combined resources into this project. I'll miss the horsepower of a Viper or Marcos, but the intensity of the racing and the enormous appeal of the BTCC will make up for that. I'm sure the Lexus IS200 is going to be a very good car - it looks the class of the field standing still!"
Erdos was heading for F1 at one stage of his career - he was a true shining light in British single seater racing ten years ago. He was Formula Renault Champion in 1990, at a time when the competition in that series was at its height. But a top line F3 drive never came off, and a move into F3000 didn't happen, despite an excellent test when he was seconds quicker than the other contenders. No less than Nigel Mansell called him "a champion for the future."
Eventually he found a second home in GT racing, partnering Cor Euser in a Marcos LM600. This was Euser's golden period, helped no end by his Brazilian partner's speed. The yellow Marcos finished second in the BPR GT2 Championship, taking no less than nine poles and seven fastest laps. Budgetry constraints saw Euser take on drivers with funding thereafter, but Erdos showed his speed in various GT cars in the Privilege Championship. At Le Mans in 1999, he all but matched Oreca's Pre-Qualifying speed in a Chamberlain Viper, despite relatively few laps.
Now, at last, his talent will come to the attention of those who should have seen it years ago. He's been 'hidden' in GT racing for too long. He and Kurt Luby are both potential Touring Car Champions, and neither can contain their desire to race for much longer.
