Porsche Cars Great Britain Programme |
Two Cars And A Young Driver Project |
|
The Porsche Cars Great Britain programme in the Privilege Championship has been confirmed for 2001. Two Porsche 911 GT3 RS cars will be entered in the GTO category of the Championship; one car will have two professional drivers on board, whilst the second will see the commencement of a Porsche Junior GT Programme (the first of its kind in the UK), which recognises the current position of GT racing in the UK.
Richard Lyons and Marino Franchitti have been selected to benefit from this project. Lyons was runner up in Formula Palmer Audi last season, but already has GT and SR2 experience, while Franchitti raced in the Slick 50 Formula Ford Championship this season. They will share one of the new GT3 RS chassis.
The professional drivers in the second car, along with the identity of the team that will run the two new Porsches, will be confirmed at a later date. The identities of each are expected to recognise previous success in the GTO category.
A Porsche Centre of Excellence will ultimately provide technical support and race spares for all Porsche competitors in the UK. The whole project is fully supported by Porsche Cars Great Britain's recently appointed Managing Director, Andy Goss. "Having spent the last few years concentrating on our financial fitness it is now timely for us to readjust our position in the sport and build on the strong heritage we hold," says Goss." We want to give our customers, our dealerships and our fans the chance to become really involved once again, and we believe this programme fulfils that aim."
Porsche Cars Great Britain's Motorsport Project Co-Ordinator, Lee Newton, describes PowerTour as “an excellent shop window for us to display our aspirations for the future.” |
