Reynard have released some of the details- or at least the thinking - behind their 01Q sports prototype for this year. This is the car that will be run by Dick Barbour at Le Mans and the ALMS as a 675 class entry, also by ROC in the ELMS and at Le Mans, and by Mark Smithson and Peter Owen in the FIA SCC (in the SR class).
Engine installation and aerodynamic packages will vary according to the category that indiviual chassis are created for.
Mark Smithson: “We continue to be totally committed to the sportscar market and over the last year have been actively developing our product and planning a long term strategy. The 01Q is the next step in our programme and we are confident that it will be a competitive package within the marketplace. We’ve learnt from our recent entry into sportscars and with a clearer understanding of customer expectations asnd needs have produced a low cost package for racing series on both sides of the Atlantic.”
The 01Q will demonstrate increased stiffness, improved aerodynamics and an improved engine installation, compared to last year’s 2KQ and its LM derivative. Weight reductions will centre around the rear chassis section and the gearbox casing. The Gemini (quickly replaceable) gearbox is retained.
Project Manager Kieron Salter described the 2000 car as “quick right from the outset, but we’ve been let down by small problems which have masked the true potential of the car. That’s all behind us now and we’re moving on to 200l, with a comprehensive update kit to prepare ourselves for another season. We are looking forward to some exciting announcements for our 2001 programme.”
One of those is yesterday’s news of the Barbour Racing Le Mans / ALMS effort, which will commence at the Donington ELMS round in April.
The Reynard “has the ability to challenge the manufacturer entrants,” says Kieron Salter. The company are to be admired for pressing on with a prototype project – and they’re certainly finding customers. The oddity about the 01Q (and its forebear) is that it is running in both the ‘senior’ and ‘junior’ classes; no other manufacturer has developed a chassis to be adaptable in this way.
